Distillation and Carbon Adsorption Filters

Distillation is one of the oldest methods of water purification that has been known for hundreds of years. The reason is that the whole process is very simple and doesn’t involve difficult water purification technologies.

During the process of distillation water is heated. While the water is boiling the stream goes up and meets the condensers that cool the vapor down and collect condensed water. Most of the contaminants are left behind. But some organics with boiling points lower than 100 degrees °C can pass with the stream to the purified water.

Water purification process that uses distillation needs a lot of water and energy. The water filter is usually very big and takes a lot of space. Besides careful maintenance is necessary in order to provide purity.

But this water purification technology allows removal of a wide range of various contaminants. And don’t forget that the distillation water filter is reusable.

The ability of the carbon water filter to cooperate efficiently depends on the type and amount of carbon used, the rate of water flow, the “age” of the carbon filter, types of the contaminants that a carbon water filter has to deal with.

Carbon water filters are used widely as they are very effective in removing bad tastes and odors. They successfully reduce many chemical among which is chlorine. Some carbon adsorption water purification systems also eliminate microorganisms.
But you can’t rely on the carbon water filter when it is important to remove dissolved solids, hardness and heavy metals. Though the latest carbon water filters can reduce lead, asbestos and cysts.
The process of carbon adsorption depends on the diameter of the pores in the carbon cartridge. The rate at which organic molecules can diffuse is also important.

There several types of carbon water filters that differ in the carbon cartridge they use. One is bases on granular activated carbon while the other uses solid block carbon.
Some granular carbon can remove chloramines. During carbon water purification free chlorine is removed. When carbon water filter is used alongside with other water filters it prevents sensitive to chlorine parts of the water purification system from damaging. To make water purification process more effective a reverse osmosis water filter is often installed together with carbon water filter.
